Time to Degree

Master’s Degree
The minimum requirement for the master’s degree is the equivalent of one academic year of full-time graduate study, consisting of at least 45 graduate credits completed to the satisfaction of the student’s program. The student whose undergraduate training has been insufficient should expect to spend more than one year fulfilling the requirements for the degree. All master’s requirements must be completed no later than five years from the date of matriculation into the degree program. (See Master’s Degrees, Course of Study .)

Doctoral Degree
The doctoral degree will be granted for no less than the equivalent of three years of full-time graduate study. All requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed within nine consecutive years of the date of matriculation into the program. Students have five academic years (pre-candidacy) to reach candidacy and the four following years (post-candidacy) to complete their research. A period of seven months must elapse between admission to doctoral candidacy and receipt of the degree. A doctoral student must be enrolled for at least 10 graduate credits in his or her program in each of three quarters during a span of five consecutive quarters.
