The MA, one of the oldest in the country, requires completing a core curriculum during the first year consisting of introductory, feminist theory, and interdisciplinary seminars that focus on foundational, intersectional, and transnational analysis. During the second year, students complete a culminating research or creative project under the supervision of a faculty committee, which also administers the culminating oral exam. Electives can be chosen from a range of courses offered by core and affiliate faculty, including internships and study abroad opportunities.
In addition to the two-year 54 quarter-credit, interdisciplinary MA degree just described, the Department of Women’s Studies offers a 4-year MA/JD joint degree in Women’s Studies and Law with the College of Law, and an 18 quarter-credit graduate certificate of concentration.
The MA/JD, the first in the nation, requires completing the first year MA core curriculum, the first year Law core curriculum, and then completing the MA project and oral exam with other law courses in the third year, and completing the JD in the fourth year. Special features include feminist legal externships and a domestic violence law clinic. As this is a dual degree, applicants must apply separately to each program. For JD application information, please visit Admissions@Law.uc.edu.
The graduate certificate, which requires completing most of the core curriculum, is available to students enrolled in other graduate degree programs and non-degree seeking students.
