The Biomedical Sciences Flex Option is designed to offer first-year doctoral students maximum exposure to the range of research available at the UC Academic Health Center and maximum flexibility in the choice of graduate programs in the College of Medicine, prior to the selection of a graduate program and area of dissertation research. Since Flex students are not limited by an investigator’s graduate program affiliation, they may select from labs across all Ph.D. programs in the College of Medicine. Flex students enter their chosen program at the beginning of their second year, with second-year standing in that program. Every doctoral student in the Biomedical Sciences Flex Option is awarded a scholarship for 100 percent tuition and fees, plus annual stipend ($22,000 in Fall 2007) and paid health insurance. Competitive fellowships are available and can raise the stipend amount. Approximately 7 new students enroll each year into the Biomedical Sciences Flex Option Program, for a total enrollment of 7 out of 70 applicants. Successful candidates have an cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.45 or above, and GRE averages above 700 Quantitative, 500 Verbal and 4.5 Analytical.
