The PFF Mentorship Experience

The Mentorship Experience

The culmination of the UC PFF Program is the (optional) Mentoring Experience, which involves 40 hours of teaching- and service-related activities planned and carried out in close cooperation with an experienced Mentor at one of our four Collaborating Cluster Institutions: Xavier University, Northern Kentucky University, College of Mount St. Joseph, or UC’s Raymond Walters College.  , Completion of the Mentoring Experience is required for the PFF Certificate.

Arranging the Mentoring Experience: You must begin planning several months in advance.

  • Apply to the PFF Certificate Program ($15 fee - Check Only).
  • Discuss your plans with your thesis advisor and obtain his/her permission.
  • Contact the PFF Director to discuss the kind of experience you would like to arrange and to identify the collaborating institution that would best serve your interests.
  • When your mentor and institution have been identified, contact the Mentor to develop a plan for your Experience, which must include at least one session of classroom teaching, observed and critiqued by your Mentor. Your Experience may include formulation of a syllabus, curriculum development, observation of several classes, attendance at faculty meetings at your Mentor’s institution, and participation in faculty committees or service obligations. An example of a well formulated plan may be found here.
  • Submit your plan to the PFF Director for approval.
  • Once your plan is approved, you may begin the Mentoring Experience.
  • Submit a final report summarizing your Experience.

    Is It Valuable?

YES! PFF students and mentors express great appreciation for the experience of working and learning together. And national studies (Wested and Abt, 2004; DeNeef, 2002) have shown that PFF gives alumni a competitive edge in the academic job market and in the early years of their career.
