University Kicks Off Important

New Initiative in Ethics

Signaling a major new commitment, the University has named a Distinguished Advisory Board to recommend ways of enhancing the ethical climate at UC and strengthening education in ethics. The Board, chaired by Dean Neville Pinto, includes several administrators, including Graduate School representatives Robert Zierolf and Robert Brackenbury, Associate Deans Robert Frank (A&S) and Robert Highsmith (COM), Vice Provost Wayne Hall, and former Dean of the College of Medicine, John Hutton. Faculty are represented by Professors Mary Brydon-Miller (CECH), Ephraim Gutmark (ENG), Pat Limbach (Chair of Chemistry), and Vanessa Carbonell (Philosophy). Postdocs and students are represented by Jamie Titus (COM) and Rebecca Desch (ENG). The Board includes several distinguished members of the community, including Terry Grundy, Director of Community Impact at United Way, Lisa Mills, Executive Director of Harmony Garden:Growing Healthy Girls; and Catherine Sherron, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Thomas More College.

The Board kicked off its activities by meeting for an all-day workshop on Ethics and Academic Administration, led by Dr. Brian Schrag, Executive Secretary of the American Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. At the workshop, held in Van Wormer Hall on Saturday, August 1st, Board Dr. Schrag presented several “cases” for discussion. These cases, thorny, real-world dilemmas, including misrepresentation and misappropriation of grant funds, political and financial pressures on research and publication, and the propriety of accepting contributions from potentially “tainted” donors, provoked lively conversations among the Board members. The last hour was spent in discussing various ethics initiatives that could be undertaken at UC. ``
