The annual Graduate Recruitment Weekend is held the first weekend of March. This event, sponsored by the Graduate School, allows graduate programs to host up to four top candidates for three days of informative activities, including department and campus tours, and conversation with faculty and current students. It has been enormously successful in introducing prospective students to the university and invariably we find that visitors leave with a greater understanding of the University of Cincinnati and all that it has to offer.
A typical weekend includes a welcome dinner where all candidates dine together with faculty and current students from their program. Guests are greeted by university officers and given the opportunity to get to know each other in a friendly, lively atmosphere. Following dinner, most programs have scheduled an activity for their guests’ entertainment – a visit to the symphony, a night on the town with current students, a party at a faculty member’s home.
The next morning’s breakfast is followed by a walking tour of the west campus and a bus tour of both the east campus and the university’s immediate surroundings. On their return, program representatives meet their guests who then spend the day with their departments. Typically, at this point, candidates can see their department’s facilities, talk with faculty, and chat with current graduate students more formally about their graduate experiences. Other possible activities include a city tour, a visit to a museum, or a local field trip, depending upon the program, and a dinner with faculty and students either at a volunteer’s home or out on the town.
The Recruitment Weekend has served as a national model for the professional association of graduate admissions professionals (NAGAP), and since it’s inception in 2000, has yielded an average of 53% enrollment.
