Editorial Assistantship Awards

Each year, the Graduate School supports outstanding faculty who also take on editing responsibilities in important academic journals, by offering the Editorial Assistantship Awards. This year, faculty submitted applications for twenty-one journals. A faculty selection committee made awards to ten of these journals. An Editorial Assistantship provides a 10-month stipend and full-tuition scholarship for a graduate student of the faculty member’s choice to act as Editorial Assistant.

Kristine Donnelly
Joint MA in Art Education and MFA student

Kristine says, “As a future art educator, I am interested in both traditional classroom teaching as well as community-based environmental art.” She has been working with young people through the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Education Department, which has allowed for a growing interest in museum education. Aside from her interests in artistry and education, her Editorial Assistantship duties will provide her with insight to another of the field’s dimensions: its scholarship. Click here for more information on Kristine’s work.

Alexadra Hagen
PhD Candidate, ABD in German Studies

Focus on German Studies is a printed and peer-reviewed Journal that is exclusively comprised of international graduate student research. Alexandra will be in charge of selecting texts, contacting publishers, and recruiting international faculty who referee submissions. Since 1993, the Journal has published 15 volumes about German literature, film, and culture. A graduate student conference in the fall precedes the publication. The 2008 conference will focus on modes of communication in German literature, film, and culture. Alexandra will be integral in both the conference and Journal’s activities.

Kate Hitchcock
MD & PhD student in Biomedical Engineering

Kate’s own research focuses on the use of ultrasound in making a life-saving stroke treatment more accessible to patients. As a result, her second year as Editorial Assistant of the Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Journal will continue to enhance and inform this agenda.

Chaichana Chaiwatpongsakorn
PhD student in Environmental Engineering

In conjunction with his Editorial Assistantship duties on the Journal of the Air and Waste Management Association, Chaichana is also heavily involved with his dissertation research, which focuses on the measurement and monitoring of carbon monoxide concentration at traffic intersections.

Sarah Ganslein
JD student

Human Rights Quarterly covers human rights topics around the world, such as headscarf bans in Turkey, global human trafficking, and the crisis in Darfur. As Managing Editor, Sarah leads a staff of law students who work diligently to ensure that the Quarterly publishes quality articles regarding public policy, human rights research, and philosophical debates. Sarah hopes to draw on her experience as Managing Editor in a future legal career advancing human rights.

Bryan Smith
PhD student in English & Comparative Literature (Creative Writing Focus)

During his Editorial Assistantship with the Cincinnati Review, Bryan will be reading submissions, handling subscriptions, copyediting, proofreading all accepted material, corresponding with contributors, and organizing volunteers. His particular responsibility this year is to further the Journal’s electronic marketing efforts, which include a “new content” section that will allow interactive discussion about the literature in the Journal’s content.

Jennifer Waldrop
MA student in English & Comparative Literature

Jennifer will be putting her writing skills to use as the Editorial Assistant for the Physiology and Behavior Journal. She will be using an online editorial database to track submissions to the Journal; to liaison between authors, reviewers, and the editorial office; to notify authors of editorial decisions and send reminders to reviewers; and also to do preliminary edits upon receipt of manuscripts. This Assistantship will be great training as she has the ultimate goal of becoming a freelance writer and/or editor.

Michael C. Connelly
PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering

Mike Connelly is studying the influence of patents on the innovation process, as well as on the common patterns observed in innovative activity. He will also be helping with the editorial work for several journals: Innovation in Materials Science, High Temperature Materials, Advances in Materials Science, and Research Letters in Materials Science. He helps authors with their articles in many ways that include proofreading, formatting help where required, answering commonly asked questions, and giving input on editorial acceptance decisions. Connelly has also participated in the technical review of some of the submitted articles.

Hoon Sung Cho
PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering

Hoon Sung Cho is studying nanotechnology (a field of science based on the control and application of molecular or atomic matter) for biomedical diagnosis and treatment. His work as an Editorial Assistant will certainly bolster his skill-set in this area.
