Responsible Conduct of Research Lecture Series
FRAUD AND THE SPECTER OF THE NAZIS: Examining Research Misconduct and Misuse in the Case against Evolutionist Ernst Haeckel
The Graduate School at the University of Cincinnati is proud to present its annual Responsible Conduct of Research Spring Lecture.
Dr. Robert Richards, a specialist on the history of evolutionary science of the University of Chicago,
will speak on the complexities surrounding cases of research misconduct and misuse. Richards will use material from his most recent book, The Tragic Sense of Life: Ernst Haeckel and the Struggle over Evolutionary Thought, to provide the lecture’s case study.
Ernst Haeckel was the most celebrated and reviled champion of Darwinism in the last half of the nineteenth century. He was alleged to have committed fraud in his depiction of embryological evidence for evolutionary theory and he has been charged. Charged with what? Recently those charges have been renewed, not only by scientific creationists and intelligent designers but also by reputable biologists and other scholars. They maintain that Haeckel’s monistic evolutionism supported Nazi racism and that recent photographic evidence confirms his duplicity. This lecture will investigate the nature of such charges of fraud and attempt to evaluate their justification, especially when lodged against an historical figure.
The event is free and open to the public.
