University of Cincinnati Graduate School Awards
The Graduate School offers graduate students and faculty several opportunities for award and recognition.
The following is a brief list of our major awards and their descriptions as well as a link to the current
recipients of each award, when applicable.
Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Distinguished Thesis Award
The MAGS Distinguished Thesis Award recognizes UC recent master’s graduates who have demonstrated exceptional scholarship
in their theses. UC full-time faculty are encouraged to nominate a recently-graduated master’s student for this award.
UC will then choose one student to nominate to MAGS, where a final selection will be made. MAGS will then award each recipient a $700 honorarium. In addition, $500
will also be available to help with the recipient’s travel expenses to attend the Annual Meeting.
Calls for nominations go out at the beginning of the fall quarter.

Editorial Assistantship Award
The Editorial Assistantship Award provides support to faculty who choose to take on journal editing responsibilities.
The award consists of an $11,000 stipend (10 month appointment) and a full tuition scholarship to selected faculty for the
hiring of a graduate student to act as his or her Editorial Assistant.
Calls for applications typically go out at the end of fall quarter.

Yates Scholars Program
The mission of the Yates Scholars Program at the University of Cincinnati is to enrich the educational environment for all graduate students by supporting
the recruitment and retention of underrepresented ethnic minorities who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with high potential for academic success in graduate
programs at the University of Cincinnati. Students are nominated through the graduate programs into which they wish to be accepted.

Excellence in Teaching Award
The Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes one outstanding graduate teaching assistant for his or her achievements in the classroom.
Academic departments with graduate programs are encouraged to nominate one graduate teaching assistant from each program in
the department. Nominees must meet the criteria on the attached page, and documentation
of all achievements upon which the nominations are based must be submitted with the nominations.
The recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award will be recommended by a faculty committee. The award will consists of a check for $1,000 and a plaque citing the recipient’s
outstanding teaching.Each of the graduate assistants nominated by his or her college will also receive a plaque.
Calls for nominations typically go out in the middle of winter quarter.

Excellence in Mentoring Award
The Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring Award recognizes outstanding and sustained guidance and support of students as they move through the process of becoming experts in their chosen fields. Nominees should have a clear and convincing history of successfully guiding the professional development of doctoral students, and may have a distinguished record of supervising students who have gone on to make significant contributions to their fields. Former and current students should acknowledge the important contribution of the nominee to their career development. Please see the attached page for this award’s criteria and submission guidelines. The Excellence in Mentoring Award call for nominations generally goes out around February 1st.

The recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award will be recommended by a faculty committee. This award is presented at the Doctoral Hooding ceremony in June, and the award will include a $1,500 honorarium.
Graduate School Distinguished Dissertation Completion Fellowship
The Graduate School Distinguished Dissertation Completion Fellowship will award up to five fellowships annually to doctoral students in the final year of degree work. The expectation is that recipients will produce superior scholarship that enhances the reputation of their program, department, and the University of Cincinnati. The Graduate School's Distinguished Dissertation Completion Fellowship Award call for nominations generally goes out around February 1st.
The recipients of this award will be recommended by a faculty committee. The awards are presented in late spring quarter, and each will include a $20,000 fellowship and a full 1 year UGS

CGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award
The University of Cincinnati selects one student to nominate to the CGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award.
Two awards are given annually, at the national level, in two different broad areas. This year’s fields of competition are: Mathematics, Physical Sciences and
Engineering, and Social Sciences. Individuals must be nominated for these awards by a member institution.
